Hundreds of children in Malawi have been touched by the Shine Early Years organization since 2010. Shine Village, in the Southern Malawian Zomba District's rural Kuntumanji, hosts preschool groups and offers training to CBOs hosting groups in the region. A warm smile greets some of the most disadvantaged children who come here every day to participate in an engaging program that includes reading, writing, lots of play, traditional singing and dancing, and a shared breakfast of porridge and fruit. This can be the only meal that certain kids get that day. The majority of Malawi's 5.9 million children under the age of five begin school at age six, or occasionally even later, and about half of them suffer from malnutrition, according to UN statistics. Children are typically left at home to labor on the farm because families are too busy looking for food.
A child obtains the fundamental pre-school instruction that is necessary to get them ready for elementary school.
Kids get to interact socially with their classmates.
Fruit and porridge every day keep them nourished and robust. Health checks are performed regularly.
Guardians of the kids in our groups are sometimes still kids themselves, and sometimes they are single moms. Shine personnel evaluate the safety and well-being of children while recognizing their immediate needs, supplying necessities, and making repairs to the run-down houses that are typical in our community. In addition to the daily struggles brought on by extreme poverty, families are frequently traumatized by the deaths of parents or other loved ones. Shine Village offers them assistance and support.
The eight acres of land that makeup Shine Village are used to grow crops, which aid in feeding the local children. As the project expands, the excess produced will support ongoing improvements at Shine Village and throughout the surrounding area, including teacher training, farming, the production of sandals and mats, and other ventures that generate revenue for the community as a whole.
